The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has taken another major step toward fully restoring its Students’ Union leadership with the successful election of new executives for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The election, held on Friday, March 6, 2026, produced Bolaji Akinpelu as the new Students’ Union President and Daniel Solomon as the General Secretary. This development marks a significant milestone in the university’s ongoing efforts to revive student representation and leadership within the institution.
How the UNILAG Students’ Union Election Was Conducted
The election exercise was coordinated by the Directorate of Student Affairs, led by the Dean, Johnson Agunsoye. The voting process took place at the Common Room of Moremi Hall within the university campus.
According to the established transition guidelines, only current Faculty Presidents in the university were eligible to participate in the election process. This approach was designed to ensure a smooth and structured transition toward the full restoration of the UNILAG Students’ Union.
Election Results
At the conclusion of the voting process:
• Bolaji Akinpelu from the Faculty of Arts emerged as the Students’ Union President, securing nine votes.
• Daniel Solomon from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics was elected General Secretary, also receiving nine votes.
Both leaders are expected to guide the Students’ Union during this transitional phase while representing the interests of the student community.
Commitment to Restoring Student Representation
Speaking after the election, Professor Agunsoye described the process as the fulfillment of a promise made by the Vice-Chancellor, Folasade T. Ogunsola, to restore the Students’ Union within the university.
He emphasized that the return of the union is not only about representation but also about preparing students for leadership roles.
According to him, the restoration of the union will:
• Provide a platform for students to express their views and concerns
• Encourage active student participation in governance
• Help develop solution-driven leaders for the future
