Academic Staff Union of Universities UNILAG Branch Announces Withdrawal of Services Over Amputated Salaries
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch of University of Lagos (UNILAG) has resolved to withdraw its services following disputes over what the union described as amputated salaries for January and February 2026.
The decision was reached during an Emergency Congress held on Tuesday, 10 March 2026, at the Faculty of Engineering Lecture Theatre, UNILAG.
Background of the Emergency Congress
The congress was convened to deliberate on the issue of amputated salaries paid to academic staff for January and February 2026.
According to the resolution issued by the union, members expressed concern that the university administration paid reduced salaries to staff members across campuses.
The congress specifically observed the following:
At the Akoka Campus, staff reportedly did not receive EAA payments.
At the Idi-Araba Campus, staff reportedly did not receive both EAA and CATA payments.
The union also stated that the February 2026 salaries paid to members were similarly amputated.
ASUU’s Position on the Salary Issue
The congress described the actions of the university administration as a violation of the principles of fairness and decency.
According to the resolution, the union believes the payment approach adopted by the university administration discriminates against its members and fails to align with what is obtainable in other federal institutions of similar status.
Key Resolutions Reached by ASUU-UNILAG
After extensive deliberations, the congress reached the following resolutions:
1. Rejection of Amputated Salaries
The congress unanimously rejected the payment of amputated salaries for January and February 2026.
According to the union, members should receive their full salary entitlements, similar to what was paid in other federal universities.
2. Withdrawal of Academic Services
The congress resolved to withdraw academic services effective:
Wednesday, 11 March 2026
The union stated that this action became necessary because the university had not paid the full salaries owed to staff members as of 9 March 2026.
3. Duration of the Industrial Action
The withdrawal of services will remain in effect until the university pays the full January and February 2026 salaries owed to members.
Reference to Previous ASUU Resolution
The decision of the congress was also said to be in line with a subsisting Pre-NDC NEC resolution of the union dated Thursday, 8 May 2025.
