The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially published the results of the 2025 Second Series Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, revealing a noticeable decline in performance when compared with 2024 figures.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, on Monday evening.
2025 WAEC GCE Performance Overview
According to the examination body, 42.17% of candidates achieved credit passes in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
This marks a drop from the 53.64% recorded in 2024, representing a decline of 11.47 percentage points.

Out of the 65,752 candidates who sat for the exam, 27,727 candidates met the five-credit benchmark, including English and Mathematics.
WAEC clarified that performance comparisons between private candidates and school candidates should be made cautiously, as private candidates operate outside the regular school system.

• 33,989 candidates (51.69%) obtained five credits with or without English and Mathematics.
• 69,604 candidates registered, reflecting a 1.8% increase from 2024’s 68,342 registrations.
• 65,752 candidates eventually sat the examination across 370 centres nationwide.
Results Processing Status
WAEC confirmed that:
• 61,943 candidates (94.21%) have had their results fully processed and released.
• 3,809 candidates (5.79%) still have some subjects pending due to issues linked to errors made during registration or examination procedures.
The council assured affected candidates that processing efforts are ongoing to ensure full release of outstanding results.
Withheld Results Due to Malpractice
A total of 1,899 candidates (2.89%) had their results withheld over alleged examination malpractice.
WAEC stated that investigations are currently underway, and final decisions will be communicated directly to affected candidates once the review process is completed.
Gender Breakdown
The gender distribution of candidates who sat the exam is as follows:
• Male: 32,005 candidates (48.68%)
• Female: 33,747 candidates (51.32%)
Among candidates who secured five credits including English and Mathematics:
• Male: 13,416 (48.39%)
• Female:14,311 (51.61%)
